What does a shower pan flood test actually check?

A shower pan flood test checks one thing: whether the waterproof pan and its drain connection hold water for 24 hours before any tile goes on. The drain is plugged, the pan is filled to just below the curb, the water level is marked, and a day later the level and everything below and around the shower are checked. If the level has not moved and nothing is damp, the pan has proved itself — if it has dropped, the leak is found and fixed while it is still cheap.

What the test proves

The liner or membrane is intact. Pinholes, punctures from screws, and splits at corners show up as a falling water level long before they would show up as a stained ceiling.

The drain connection seals. The joint between the pan and the drain body is the single most common leak point in a shower. A flood test puts that joint under a full head of water for a full day.

The falls work. While the pan is full — and again as it drains — you can see whether water moves to the drain or ponds in a corner. A pan built with the standard ¼ inch of fall per foot toward the drain drains clean; a flat pan tells on itself.

How the test is done properly

The drain is plugged with a test plug or balloon below the weep holes, the pan is filled slowly to just below the top of the curb, and the level is marked with tape or a pencil line. Twenty-four hours later the level is compared to the mark, and the ceiling and framing below, plus the floor outside the curb, are checked for any damp. Evaporation over one day in a Colorado home is minimal — a visible drop is a leak until proved otherwise. Many Colorado Springs-area inspectors expect a flood test on a permitted shower pan, and it is standard practice under TCNA methods regardless of whether an inspector will see it.

What a flood test cannot check

It does not test the shower walls, the valve, or the plumbing supplies — those are checked separately, with the water on, before the walls close. It also cannot rescue a badly built pan: if the falls are wrong, the honest fix found by the test is to rebuild the pan, not to seal over the problem and hope.

Why skipping it is a gamble

Once tile, grout and glass are on, a pan leak hides for months. The first signs are usually a musty smell, grout that stays dark, or a stain on the ceiling below — by which time the repair is a tear-out, not a patch. In Colorado Springs, Monument, Falcon, Peyton and across the Front Range, a day spent flood-testing is the cheapest insurance in the whole remodel.

Booking note: November has room for handyman work and smaller tile jobs; larger bathroom remodels are booking into December. Signature shower pan and tile packages start from $2,800; installed shower pans are $600 concrete and $800 foam.

The short version

Plug it, fill it, mark it, wait 24 hours. A pan that holds water gets tiled; a pan that does not gets fixed now, cheap. Want a shower built — and tested — properly? Call The British Remodeler at 719-521-8312.
